Welcome to the 6th Grade Medieval Guild Resource Guide. Here students will find supplemental reading & media about the medieval guilds they are joining this year.
The Medieval Guilds
Guilds were an important part of life in the Middle Ages. A higher social status could be achieved through guild membership, and feudalism encouraged people to do this. There were many advantages of becoming a member of a guild. Guild members in the Middle Ages were supported by the guild if they became sick. There were two main kinds of Medieval guilds - Merchant Guilds and Craft Guilds. A person would have to work through three phases to become an elite member of a Medieval Guild during the Middle Ages - apprentice, journeyman and master.
You will start as an apprentice in your guild and will work your way up to being a master. Masters will share their work with the community at our annual Medieval Pageant. Over the next few months, we will adjust the schedule so that you and the other members of your guild will meet together. Between guild meetings, you will be expected to do independent research and complete tasks that are necessary to ensure the success of your guild.
In addition to learning about your guild topic and becoming a master, each of you will create a Medieval character who you will portray at the Pageant. In your regular classes, you will develop your character's "story" and in your drama class you will learn how to bring this character to life. Ready? Your journey begins NOW!
